The Flats Challenge – Day 6

Okay, so I freely admit that I’ve been slacking in the whole blogging thing when it comes to the flats challenge, but dude……I’m handwashing all my diapers and getting ready for Amelia’s baptism and a party for like 50 people tomorrow – cut me some slack!! Actually, as of right now everything is pretty much under control as evidenced by the fact that I’m sitting at my computer typing and not running around like a psycho……

Wednesday night, I paid for the party room – our complex has two rooms that they rent out to residents for parties for a nominal fee…..and each room has a full kitchen which makes party prep very nice. Thursday night, I got the certificates of eligibility from Amelia’s godparents and delivered them to the rectory so there would be no last minute problems when they weren’t in her file come tomorrow.

Last night….well, afternoon-ish into last night…..I ducked out of work an hour early, picked Bill up and we went right to BJ’s. I didn’t want to go there today and risk getting over-run by the “spending the holiday weekend at home and just having a few people over for a cook-out” crowd and fortunately, we got there early enough yesterday to beat the “heading down the shore so we need some cases of soda, chips and jerky beef” crowd.

So now my fridge and freezer look like I’m preparing to feed a small army and I’m actually really not making that much…..just (frozen) meatballs, hot dogs and sauerkraut and hot turkey for sandwiches – each with a crock pot specially designated for it and standing ready by my front door to be taken down to the party room as soon as we get the key. I’m also making baked rotini with “homemade” sausage sauce….I’ll worry about that after we get home from one more quick store run…..in which I run to the dollar store for some serving utensils and the deli to pick up the sliced turkey……and hope that the six 12 packs of soda in my trunk don’t explode or crush the chips – I usually park right outside the door where the party room is, so we just left all that junk in the car to save extra trips up and down ;^)

Yes, yes….enough about the party prep, right?

BabyWearing
09.06.2011, 23:13
Filed under: alternatives, baby gear, baby wearing, hippie mama, working mom

Okay, so I was reading this post over at Hobo Mama’s and I started writing a comment….on my phone…….and it was too long to post there…..so rather than scrap the whole story, I figured I’d elaborate on it a bit over here and give you a rough idea of where I fit in – or don’t – when it comes to babywearing.

With my first-born, I decided that I absolutely loathed the infant car seat carrier for getting her from place to place….it was beyond awkward to carry, awful on my back and just felt…….kind of weird, like I was keeping her at a distance.  So, a well meaning family member bought us a Fisher Price harness type carrier…..yeah, that was even *worse* on my back and there was no kind of support for Monkey.

Monkey is starting 6th grade tomorrow and this past weekend, DH discovered that carrier in the basement of our mountain house…..we brought it home, thinking he could give it a shot eventually – I have lower back problems, but he has upper back and neck issues so he might be okay with it….either way, BabyFrog is still too small for it, I think…..again, no support.

So, I’m new to this whole babywearing thing….like I said, didn’t really happen with my oldest.  But again, I hate that damn car seat carrier!  I didn’t even want to buy one this time so we got this car seat instead. We do have one with a carrier, but that’s the back-up cat seat in DH’s car…..the seat in my car stays put.

Now, we live in an apartment and it’s a pretty good walk and an elevator ride from my car to our front door. So I wanted an easy way to get BabyFrog from the car to our apartment without having to break out the coach or something…..so when I was pregnant, I started looking at carriers again and loooooved how much they’ve evolved in 11 years.  But I was still not sure it’d be right for me so I went with something……uhhh….inexpensive to test it out.  I’m still not sure on the terminology, but it’s maybe a pouch-sling?  peanut shell?  I dunno……this one:

Me wearing BabyFrog and still trying to keep my hair out of my face - quite possibly my most favorite pic of me in a long time :^)

I adore this sling, it’s just perfect, sits just right on me and BabyFrog seems to find it comfy.  But now I’m dying to try other types – like this one or this one…..the Moby and other carriers like it make me a little nervous (because I can’t tie my shoes so they stay tied) so I might go for the mei tai first.

Now, this sling is just awesome for both of us. It keeps my BabyFrog exactly where I want her to be – and where she wants to be! – and to be perfectly honest, I think I may be developing an addiction. But knowing that I’d be heading back to work, I couldn’t keep her in it with me all the time.  Fortunately, my husband is a WAHD so it wasn’t going to be a total upheaval for her when I started back last week but we spent a good bit of time during my maternity leave getting her used to being in the sling with my husband, as well as in the swing and bouncy seats we have for her.

I’m always wary of these devices because you always see so many people that just plop their kids in them and abandon them for hours on end but around here they are a necessary evil.  I started out easy with both of them and would have them right next to me while I wrote out thank you cards and birth announcements or would have her in the doorway of the kitchen while I was getting dinner ready, talking to her as I went along…..someone – either DH, monkey or myself –  was always with her.

So far, so good and now that she’s getting settled into a routine during the day, I *can* wear her all night if I want to – and after a day at my job, that’s pretty much all I want to do when I get home!

So Lauren’s post mentioned some attempts to drag babywearing into the mainstream by including it in certain advertising campaigns.  I’m not really able to comment on this because…..well, I don’t see much in the way of print advertising – DH is the coupon guru around here…..and we don’t have a conventional TV set up.  We don’t have cable because I won’t support the monopoly that is Comcast anymore and we can’t have a dish – apartment rules.  Most of our TV is internet based and pretty much only shows ads for GoDaddy, eHarmony and Orbitz……we do have an antenna for local TV but if any city were decidedly NOT into natural parenting, it’s Philly….at least in the Northeast, where I live….maybe in Center City there are some granola eaters somewhere.

I would, however, like to mention something incredible that I’ve witnessed. Now, I know that BabyFrog is the cutest baby in the entire world, as was her big sister. And I’ve been with other people walking around with their babies all the time. But whenever we’re out with BabyFrog in the sling, people are fascinated!  Complete strangers come over to us to make a big fuss over the beautiful baby in the sling. Young and old, both men and women, people have actually gone out of their way to come see the baby and not once has anyone had a disparaging remark about the sling – most of the older people remark that they wish they’d had something like that when they had young children.  How content she seems, how easy it must make things for me and how wonderful for the baby to be able to be close to me like that without having to be juggled around. How right they are!

Now and then, behind the “Oh, what a gorgeous baby and what a clever way for you to carry her around!” I get the feeling that there’s a “I’d never use anything like that, but, hey – more power to ya!” that doesn’t get verbalized. But ya know what….that’s okay because I know those people are going to go home and say to a family member or friend “Today I saw a chick in a Queen t-shirt and she had the sweetest baby in the world today and – get this – she was carrying that baby around right next to her heart in a sling that criss-crossed that clever lady’s back…..don’t that just beat all?!?” and that friend or family member will think “Hmmm….a sling…..what a great idea!” and then that person will go buy one and have strangers walking up to them to talk about their baby in the sling and the message will spread.

After all, it’s not really like it’s something new….wearing your baby is just the way its done in a lot of places and has been for centuries…….maybe as our world gets smaller, it will catch on and just be the way it is – sure, it wouldn’t be such an awesomely exclusive group of people wearing their babies, but there’d be generations of happy well adjusted babies out there 😉

……or maybe babywearing doll accessories will cause a big stir, too – lol!!

Breastfeeding in the City

I go back to work on Thursday.

The day after tomorrow.

A while back, I bought this Breast Milk Storage Kit from Playtex which I love and works out beautifully with my awesome little Playtex breast pump. The plan was to use this kit with the pump to make for easy thawing and feeding while I’m in work…..we realized that it’s kind of impractical to expect to build up a stash as I go unless I keep buying these kits so that we have rings and lids for storage. Meh.

So, I said we’ll use up all the milk I have stored with this kit and fee up all the toppers so that I have extras to bring back and forth to work with me and just get regular old breast milk storage bags to keep the home supply.

Last night, I took Monkey over to Cross Country practice and thought since there’s a CVS right across the street, I’d just run in there grab a 25 count pack for now, until I set up my subscription with Amazon……also, used my last Earth Mama Angel Baby Milkmaid teabag so I figured CVS carries vitamins and all that junk, they’re bound to have some Traditional Medicinals tea………right?

Ha!

Hurricane Irene

Well, our hatches are all battened down as we wait for the big storm here in Philly….and we’re hoping that our patio gang has some good hiding spots :-\

Oh, and since BabyFrog looooooooves the rain, I put her in my Hot Mama Ink sling and took her outside for the rain at the front end of the storm……and she promptly fell asleep – lol :^)

So….what are you wearing?

I mentioned a while back that my problem with nursing in public is not so much whether or not I have the right to do so, cuz I do and I will so everyone can just get over it…..my problem is my own personal modesty issues and personal comfort. I mean at home, I can enjoy a cup of tea and nurse BabyFrog while wearing a tank top and a “comfortable” bra….but, outside the comfort of our apartment is still a work in progress. I’ve had a little bit of success nursing with BabyFrog in my awesome sling and I absolutely love it….but she’s outgrowing it much quicker than I thought she would so it can be a little tough to work that. Totally getting another sling, though, it’s awesome!!

Now, I haven’t managed to get my hands on a Baby Bond – though I would still very much like to! – I went out today and bought a bunch of tops to serve as nursing tops….over the past few weeks, I’ve discovered that it’s nearly impossible to find actual nursing tops that are “me”…so today, I hit our favorite second hand store and looked for tops that would not only work to modestly NIP but are still something I would wear or would at least make it easier to nurse while wearing my favorite t-shirts ;^)

I’m still dealing with this bra thing, though….I’ve been through pretty much every nursing bra I can find and none of them are even a little bit comfortable for me to wear in public. I like my super-supportive, pre-formed bras with the bone and the underwire….they lift, separate and relieve the fatigue in my upper back – that is comfortable! They are however not great for breastfeeding….over, under, slip the strap down – nope, nope, nope…..so I’m stuck with two cottony, stretchy things that I bought a while back for sitting around in. While they do have an underwire, they just can’t cope…..I’m a DD to begin with and wearing one of these things when we go out…..I feel awful. Miserable. Frumpy. Ugh. I think I might have to perform surgery on one of my good bras before I go back to work to see if I can get it to work, at least for pumping.

So, how have you managed to make nursing – whether in public or not – work for you? What about your bra? Are you really happy with it? If so, can you tell me what it is…..please????

Oh, and please head over and “like” the FrogMonkey Facebook page – I’ll be using that to share some interesting links, news and other fun-stuff that I normally wouldn’t post here. Love to see you there! ;^)

Store Score!!

image

So normally, I hate going to stores. I much prefer online shopping. But now and then, I can really score when I actually go shopping.

I really only went to Babies “R” Us to get some tea because I’m addicted to the stuff and I’m completely out so I don’t want to have to wait for it to get here Monday. Of course, once I’m there, I can’t not look around…..I was going to order some Gerber pre-folds this week so I checked to see if they had those….they did, but the Babies “R” Us brand pre-folds were not only $2 cheaper, but they were BOGO50%off – woot!

We also wanted to grab some disposables because even though we use cloth during the day, I still haven’t been brave enough to do it at night…..so Bill noticed that if you buy the Seventh Generation diapers, you get a free pack of their wipes…..only a small pack but it’s usually $5 so, WTF, right?

But the best deal of the day – and the reason I’m so happy I went there looking for my tea! – on the clearance rack, there was an Earth Mama Angel Baby Breastfeeding Support kit……..for $5!!! Yeah, it was ripped open and the Booby Tubes were missing, but there was an extra Bosom Buddies in there, so that’s cool.

So all these goodies should have cost about $95….I paid $40…..and they threw in the Butt Paste – lol ;^)

Took the Monkey out to the pool today with BabyFrog in my Hot Mama Ink Sling. All the geriatrics came over to visit with us and fuss over the little girl and tell us about how babies didn’t go outside for 2 months back when they had their kids….BabyFrog was more fascinated with the sun on her fingers 🙂
